People of Eureka and Arcata Say No To Army Recruiting Youth Under 18
Fall 2008:
2,200 people in Eureka, California signed petitions to put on the ballot a measure prohibiting U.S. military recruiters from seeking to recruit anyone in the city under 18. So did 2,200 people in Arcata.
They debated with members of the American Legion and others. They acted when the news is that there are 200,000 veterans of this and previous wars who are homeless. And the news is that 18 veterans commit suicide every day.
Nov. 4 they voted. They won by 57% in Eureka and by 73% in Arcata among 38,000 citizens. The U.S. Department of Defense asked the U.S. Department of Justice to sue in federal court to prevent enforcement of this decision.
MCLI suggested including in the City's defense the 9th and 10th Amendments and Art. I, Sec. 8 of the U.S.Constitution.
