An Appeal to Reason
by Ann Fagan Ginger
This is the time that tries the souls of women and men.
This is the first time in the history of the world
- that there is one super power with the military ability to destroy all life on the planet with nuclear and other weapons.
- that this super power is led by someone who came into the office illegally with the support of a military/industrial complex with budgets and amendments to existing laws and regulations that will end civilian government and nonmilitary capitalism as it has existed.
- that the supine commercial media provide none of the basic facts or relevant law for public consumption.
- that this fortress is attacked during the midst of a global economic recession by people with less financial or military power operating airplanes and anthrax powder, leading everyone in the nation, at one moment, to discover they have no security.
And, it is the first time in the history of the world
- that there is a United Nations system in place with a Charter that spells out precisely what steps should be taken in the present situation.
- that there is a U.N. Military Task Force and a system of peace-keeping forces capable of dealing with this problem.
- that there is an International Court of Justice in place that can try the alleged terrorists.
- that there is an international means of immediate communication through Internet and dedicated journalists of all ages, races, nations, religions, genders.
At this moment, before the ideology of a Homeland Security Office takes over with passage of an Anti-Terrorism Act making large holes in basic constitutional rights, as the summer lawyer and the sunshine law professor shrink from the challenge, each of us, the winter peacebuilders, need to learn how to work more effectively with each other within the civilian democratic system to stop the bombings, to stop the ground troops, and to return to the law and order set forth in the Constitution and Charter of this superpower.
